Abstract:
Lakes selected from 2000 U.S. Census Bureau TIGER files. The lake names were enhanced using the U.S. Geological Survey Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), and the elevations were copied from the GNIS and interpolated from U.S. Geological Survey 30-meter digital elevation models.

Data Quality Information:
Attribute accuracy report:
Names were copied from the TIGER files and found to be inaccurate in over 1 percent of the cases where they existed. Names were copied automatically from the GNIS where the water body overlaid a GNIS point. GNIS names that were within 100 meters of a water body were copied to the nearest water body when visual inspection deemed it appropriate. There are likely many mistakes remaining in the water body names. Elevations copied from the GNIS and Digital Elevation Models have not been examined, except in cases where the two elevations for the same water body differed by over 1000 feet due to obvious blunders in the GNIS. The GNIS elevation was re-set to -9999 in these cases. The accuracy of the elevations is unknown.

Completeness report:
This is a complete representation of the lakes and reservoirs in the TIGER files. Many lakes and reservoirs listed in the GNIS do not appear in this data, probably mostly due to being too small to appear on 1:100,000 scale maps.

Horizontal Positional Accuracy Report:
Approximate horizontal accuracy is 51 meters, assuming source data meets National Map Accuracy Standards.

Process step:
The TIGER/Line files were imported into a series of ArcView shapefiles using TGR2SHP version 4.1 by GIS Tools of Knoxville, TN. This step produced water body shapefiles for each county.
Process date: 2001
Process step:
The individual county water shape files were projected to Montana State Plane Coordinates and combined into a single data set.
Process date: 2001
Process step:
All large un-named polygons were compared to lakes, reservoirs, and islands in the GNIS and were assigned names wherever possible.
Process date: 06/25/2001
Process step:
All adjacent water polygons with different names were examined and any mistakes were corrected. This happened frequently where a water body was crossed by a Census boundary line. It also happened where the Census Bureau demarked named bays and inlets from their main bodies of water. These demarcations and the names of the bays and the inlets were removed.
Process date: 06/26/2001
Process step:
All adjacent polygons with the same name were dissolved into single polygons. In cases where an un-named glacier was adjacent to an un-named lake, this step would have merged them, and this was a mistake.
Process date: 06/27/2001
Process step:
All un-named water polygons were automatically assigned the names and elevations of any lake point from the GNIS that was inside the polygon. All named polygons were assigned the elevation of the GNIS points that were inside them.
Process date: 07/02/2001
Process step:
All water polygons that fell within 500 meters of a GNIS lake were examined. Where the water polygon was un-named and a GNIS point seemed to correspond to the water polygon, the GNIS name and elevation were copied to the polygon. Where the water polygon was named differently than a GNIS point that seemed to correspond to the polygon, the GNIS name and elevation were copied to the polygon.
Process date: 07/03/2001
Process step:
The ELEV2 attribute for all lake polygons were interpolated from the digital elevation model.
Process date: 07/03/2001
